Situated below the Fintry hills this Motte and Bailey castle was said to be the birthplace of John the Graham, the friend of William Wallace, he lived here in any event, and the Wallace often came this way when hotly pursued by his enemies. Sir John, who was the faithful companion of the national hero in many of his exploits, fell at the battle of Falkirk, and Wallace's lament over his body in the metrical chronicle of Blind Harry is one of the most interesting passages in that romantic and popular narrative of the Scottish champions exploits. Henry the Minstrel represents him as saying:
