The conservation of Ardvreck Castle, built by the MacLeods of Assynt in 2 phases (c1500 and c1590), is a major part of the Inchnadamph Project. The Project has been undertaken by Historic Assynt. The aim is to conserve the Castle and two other historically linked buildings in their present state and prevent further collapse. The nearby Old Parish Church of Assynt at Inchnadamph is to be restored to house interpretation of the buildings and the social & cultural history of the area. Various conservation professionals are putting together the final reports and it is hoped that applications to various funding agencies will be made later this year. Ardvreck Castle is the "star of the show" and much of the history of Assynt took place in its shadow. Probably the most notable event in the Castles history, from a national perspective, was the imprisonment of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose there, after his defeat at the Battle of Carbisdale in 1650. It is hoped that a booklet on the Castle will be completed shortly. It will be sold, along with other relevant items now available, to help raise funds for administration costs and professional fees, as well as a part, however small, of the £1.4 million required for the whole Project. The conservation of Ardvreck will take a number of years to complete and the entire Project is expected to last 8 to 10 years at least. Research into the Castles history is ongoing and Historic Assynt hopes soon to open its own web page, where contributions of information will be welcomed, as, of course, will those of a financial nature!
