A sign of allegiance to a clan is the wearing of its badge (sometimes termed ‘clan crest). A clansman or woman may wear a badge comprising the clan chief’s crest, encircled with a strap and buckle bearing their chief’s motto or slogan. In principle these badges should only be used with the permission of the clan chief. The Graham badge is a falcon killing a stork with the chief’s motto ‘Ne Oublie’ across the top of the belt. The motto is old french and means ‘Do not forget’. In the past a motto was used as a way to rally a clan in times of emergency and is sometimes refered to as a war cry. Although many Graham branches had their own arms and badges, all these families were derived from that of the main line of Grahams (Montrose). One of the largest of these was a number of Graham families that came from that of the Menteith branch. Their badge was the head of an eagle with the motto ‘Right and Reason’.
