Tartans
The official clan tartan is the modern Graham of Montrose. Clan tartans are authorised by the chief and registered with the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh although it should be noted that there is no legal requirement to wear the right tartan. That means that anyone can wear a tartan pattern that suits their taste. The current Graham of Montrose tartan dates to around 1815 and is said to be based on an older tartan which was black and green.
Other tartans include the Graham of Menteith as well as the red Graham tartan which is a very recent design based on that of the MacNaughton plaid. The story behind this was that when the 1st Marquis of Montrose was being led from the highlands to Edinburgh for his execution, a MacNaughton clansman handed him his garb as he passed through Fife to keep him warm on the journey south.
